At By The Book Safety Services & Training Inc., we believe that all employees should be equipped with the knowledge to safely handle any materials they may encounter in a work environment. That’s why we offer the Enform H2S Alive Training – to teach employees how to safely and effectively manage Hydrogen Sulphide in the workplace.

What is Hydrogen Sulphide?

Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) is a naturally-occurring gas that can be found in natural gas reservoirs and crude petroleum. It is flammable and emits a strong sulphuric odour (similar to rotten eggs). It can also be produced by:

  • The bacterial breakdown of human and animal waste
  • Waste treatment facilities
  • Tar, asphalt and sulphur production
  • Tanneries and refineries

Workers are most commonly exposed to hydrogen sulphide during the drilling and production of natural gas, petroleum and crude oil. Miners and well-drillers may also be exposed to underground pockets of hydrogen sulphide. Exposure to hydrogen sulphide can have both short and long term health effects, so it’s important for workers to know what to do when they come in contact with this toxic gas.

Short Term Exposure
  • Irritation of the nose, throat, eyes and lungs
  • Digestive upset
  • Headaches, dizziness, and fainting
  • Pulmonary edema (build-up of fluid in the lungs)
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Respiratory paralysis

These symptoms can increase in intensity depending on the concentration of hydrogen sulphide in the air. Many people will not experience these symptoms until up to 72 hours after the initial exposure to hydrogen sulphide. Many of these short term effects, including pulmonary edema, irregular heartbeat, and respiratory paralysis, can be fatal. While it is possible to recover from the effects of short term hydrogen sulphide exposure, these short term effects can lead to serious and permanent damage to the respiratory and nervous systems.

Long Term Exposure
  • Reduced lung function.
  • Neurological damage such as headaches, fatigue, and depression.
  • Damage to mucous membranes and the cardiovascular system.

Hydrogen sulphide presents significant health and safety risks, so it’s important for every employee to learn safe hydrogen sulphide practices.

During the Enform H2S Alive Training, students will learn how to circumvent the dangers of working around hydrogen sulphide. This in-depth course goes through the physical properties and health hazards of H2S. Students will learn how to protect themselves, co-workers and the public from this dangerous gas in different industries and environments. They will also learn basic rescue techniques and how to operate a self-contained breathing apparatus.

This course will arm employees with the most up-to-date treatment and prevention strategies, so you can rest assured that your workplace will stay safe. Upon completing the course with an exam mark of 70% or higher, students will receive a three year certification.
